Computer Assisted Programs - Free
Using the computer is a fun way to learn English. Even if you don't know how to use a computer, we'll teach you how. It's easy and you will be very happy with the programs that help you with reading, spelling, grammar and idioms. You can even record your voice and compare it to the speaker on the computer program. The computer lab is open every Monday morning from 9:30 till Noon when we will teach you how to use the interactive programs. You may study in the lab independently on the other weekday mornings from 9:30 till Noon by asking at the Computer Assistance Desk. There is no registration. Just come to the lab and see what may help you with your English skills.

The computer lab is a great way to continue your study of English once you've finished ESL class or just as a way to fit in some extra time for study.

  Learning on Your Own

The library has a special collection of books, books with cassettes, videos, DVDs and CD-ROMs in the Literacy Collection located on the second floor of the library to your right when you get off the elevator. These materials will help you learn English. Many of the books have answers in the front or back of the book. You can't write in these books but you can use other paper to write out your answers. Then check your work by looking at the answer key. Many people don't have time to go to classes so these books will help you learn on your own at home. Learning a new language takes a lot of time. Save some time each day to study with these special materials.

The books listed below will help you with professional English and business English.  It is important to understand the proper English to use in business meetings, presentations and business letters, faxes and e-mails.

  Did You Know?

The Memorial Day weekend is always on the last Monday of May.  It is the unofficial start of the summer season.  With warmer weather, many people will enjoy cooking on their outdoor grills.  Try this website for wonderful recipes from Dominick's, a popular place for many of us to shop. http://grilling.dominicks.com/

With a long summer season ahead of us, you may want to explore some of the wonderful farms within 50 miles of the Chicago area.  Try picking some of your own vegetables, fruits and berries.  The strawberry season is now.  Cool weather may delay the berries until the end of June but you can contact the farm before you make your plans.

Here are some websites that will give you information about picking your own produce.

http://susiesgardenpatch.com   Susie's Garden Patch is located in Garden Prairie, IL. Here you can pick vegetables early in the summer.

http://www.allseasonfarm.com  All Season Farm is located in Woodstock, about 50 mile northwest of Chicago.  They have Asisan pears also and many different kinds of apples.

http://www.royaloakfarmorchard.com  Royal Oak Farm Orchard is in Harvard, IL.  You can pick peaches, raspberries, apples and visit the petting zoo and eat in their restaurant.

Summer Fun Close to Home
Many special events are planned in both Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg.  You can go to www.ci.schaumburg.il.us/ and click on Events at the top of the page for information about Schaumburg's summer plans.  The Farmers Market will begin this Friday, June 13 from 7 am till 1 pm in Town Square at Roselle & Schaumburg Roads.  It will continue each Friday until October 10.

Hoffman Estates' website www.hoffmanestatesarts.com will also give you information about their summer concert series each Thursday evening at 7 pm on the Village Green.  Click on the download for the entire summer schedule.  These concerts are free.

The Schaumburg Township District Library also offers free concerts each Monday evening at 6:45 in the Towns Square Park across from the library at Roselle & Schaumburg Roads.  Go to www.stdl.org and choose the e-newsletters and click on Musically Yours for the complete list of musical performances.

There's so much to do during the summer.  Enjoy time with your family and friends and remember to mark your calendar with the testing dates if you plan to attend ESL classes at the library.
