 November Programming

November is a month best remembered for two holidays --Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime. Thanksgiving is a holiday that encourages us to step back and give thanks for all the blessings we have.

On Nov. 8, we will present a patriotic program called "USA, All the Way" in honor of Veterans Day. Since World War I ended at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918 (the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11 month), the day became known as "Armistice Day, which officially received its name in America in 1926 through a Congressional resolution. It became a national holiday 12 years later by similar Congressional action. Then in 1954, President Eisenhower signed the bill proclaiming Nov.11 as Veterans Day, and called for Americans everywhere to rededicate themselves to the cause of peace.

On Nov.15, a "Tribute to Will Rogers" will be presented to honor a great American legend. Will Rogers was known for his wit and general love and respect for humanity and people everywhere. His opinions were sought after by leaders of the world. During his lifetime, he traveled around the globe three times meeting people, covering wars, talking about peace and learning everything possible.

One of the most notable quotes by Will Rogers was, "We will never have true civilization until we have learned to recognize the rights of others."  It is ironic how many of Will Rogers' comments apply directly to the news headlines today. Will Rogers helped this country through uncertain times and is doing the same thing today.

Introduction to a New Acquisition - MP3s
On Oct. 5, MP3-CDs were introduced to the Audiovisual Dept., with nine titles added to the Audiovisual collection.

An MP3-CD is a compact disc that is identical in size and appearance to a regular audio compact disc. However, the information on the disc is compressed so much more can fit. A standard CD can only hold 74 minutes of material. An MP3-CD can hold over 20 hours of material. The sound quality is very good. In fact, millions of people use MP3 compression to store their music libraries. You can listen to an MP3-CD on most newer DVD players, nearly all personal computers and any CD player that is MP3-CD compatible. To find out if your CD or DVD player is MP3-CD compatible, the term MP3 will be printed on the front or top of the device.

The Audiovisual Department welcomes all suggestions. Please stop by the AV Information Desk to make your inquiries or suggestions.  While you are there please enter a drawing for a signed MP3-CD.

Lance Brown

"Tribute to Will Rogers"
With Lance Brown
Monday, Nov. 15, 7 p.m. Audiovisual Dept.

Lance Brown's "Tribute to Will Rogers" is a journey into the roots of the American experience. Lance Brown plays and sings the cowboy songs and popular music of Will's day as a backdrop to Rogers' life story. He explores how Will's wit and wisdom was influenced by his early contact with the working cowboys of the late 1880s.  While Lance Brown performs as Will Rogers throughout most of the show, he also provides some personal insights into Will Rogers - the man and his times. Lance Brown played guitar with rock and jazz bands, then branched out into songwriting and solo performing. He soon realized he could make a greater contribution through music and the spoken word.
As Will Rogers, Lance Brown addresses the issues that confront us today; the environment, politicians, the national debt and more. He brings us history and hilarity, a few rope tricks and a few tears, but mostly he brings us the irrepressible spirit of Will Rogers and hope for our troubled times.
