Limited Edition Big Band with vocalist Julie
Creighton Monday, Aug. 1, 7 p.m. Outdoors in
Town Square Rain date: Aug. 4
The Limited Edition Big Band,
Inc. has been delighting audiences in the Chicago area for more
than 17 years. With a stunning library of over 1100 songs,
these musicians cover the full spectrum of big band swing, jazz
and dance music. The band was formed in March, 1988 by Dick
Gulbrandsen who plays trombone with the group. Dick has had a long
standing love affair with big band music, having started his first
band in 1950. He has been playing with local area bands ever since.
Although he has played shows, orchestra pits, symphonic concert
bands and even a drum and bugle corps, big band music is what he
enjoys playing the most.
These 17
musicians, many of whom are session players or members of other
jazz, big band or pop bands in the Chicago Metropolitan area, are a
"cream of the crop" ensemble. The Limited Edition Big Band, Inc. has
performed at most venues in the Chicago area and just finished
its 5th appearance on the main stage of the Naperville rib
fest on July 4 following Loretta Lynn's act. The band has been
invited back for July 4, 2006.
Playing a variety
of locations, including private parties, formal dinner dances,
clubs, festivals and parades, the band has built up quite a
following. It has performed at the openings of several area
night clubs, including the Living Room in Schaumburg. In the spirit
of the old time big bands, the band rented a bus and traveled to
southern Illinois to perform at the Peoria Riverfront Jazz
Festival.
The ages of the
musicians range from 25 to 85, thereby mixing experience with
youthful exuberance. Several of the players have toured
internationally with big stars. Dick Daugherty, who plays lead also
sax, at one time toured with Henry Mancini. Scott Fisher,
trombonist, toured with the Ray Charles ensemble in Italy. There are
many fine soloists with the band in all sections and they are
frequently showcased. Limited Edition also lays claim to a
featured trumpet play, Cary Davids, who moonlights as a nuclear
physicist.
While the music of
greats like Count Basie are popular with the band, classics by Glenn
Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman also are well represented. Many
tunes from the "good old days" have been brought into the
present with new, modern arrangements.
 Julie Creighton
Julie Creighton has been the vocalist with the Limited
Edition Big Band for the last seven years. She started as a drummer
and percussionist in 6th grade - skills she learned from her
late brother, dummer/bandleader, Tony Caselli.
Julie played all through her high school jazz band led by Paul
Tolosko. She gave up the drums to focus on singing at 19 and has
been a vocalist ever since, except for taking a hiatus to
concentrate on motherhood. When Gloria Estefan was on Oprah
promoting her tune "Reach" for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, Julie
had the pleasure of being one of her backup singers for the show.
Julie is married to bandleader/musician, Dave Creighton and has
enjoyed returning to her big band roots. She enjoys singing a
variety of vocal arrangemenets by revisiting some of the beautiful
timeless standards as well as more contemporary material.

Jay Mau Orchestra has performed throughout the greater
Chicago area providing big band sounds of some of the great

locations the orchestra has performed are the Empress, Rialto, Oak

The Jay Mau Orchestra,
formed in 1932, was originally called the Roy Gordon Orchestra. When
leader Roy Carlos passed away several years ago, Jay took over the
band and renamed it the Jay Mau Orchestra. Jay has been an active
musician in the Joliet area for 35 years. You may remember the group
called the Three Jay's, which he formed in the 1960's. Jay's Uncle
Robert had a big band in the 1930's called Bob May and the Oriole's.
The Jay Mau Orchestra is composed of local musicians who love to
entertain. They will be returning to the library for the second
consecutive year.
 Luci
D'Mari
Lucille
Maricich-DeCero, wife, mother and grandmother, has always had a firm
belief and trust in God and a strong love of country. Beginning in
grammar school when she won an award for best essay on good
citizenship, she grew into an outspoken, frequent contributor to
various publications on the subject of patriotism and good
government.
In her
professional life as Luci D'Mari, she is a singer-entertainer,
composer-lyrcisit, recording artist and cable TV performer. Luci had
a weekly cable show for two and a half years. Born too late to be
part of the "big band era," she grew up singing their music, working
her way from piano bars to the few big bands still around
today.
After writing the patriotic song, "I Live in
America," Luci achieved her goal of singing it in the crown of
The Statue of Liberty on its 100th birthday in October, 1986, in
