 Town Square
Hundreds of people lined the Town Square seating area
waiting patiently for the Summer Concert Series to start. They were
not disappointed when all 13 events were presented starting in June
and continuing on through August.
Many tunes from the
"good old days" were brought into the present with new, modern
arrangements. Vocalists sang a variety of arrangements by revisiting
some of the beautiful, timeless standards as well as more
contemporary material.
These
successful events will remain in our minds forever. The library
hopes to continue the concert series next year, making it
an annual event for all ages to enjoy.
The
library again wishes to thank all of the fine entertainers who so
graciously agreed to play during one of Chicago's hottest summer
seasons. Our heartfelt thanks go to: Mike

Last

 The
Teflons Monday, Sept. 19, 7 p.m. Audiovisual
Department
Country, doo-wop, swing, Hawaiian and rare originals from
three powerful-voiced females and a guy! Welcome to the Teflons.
Stir it up with Barbara Silverman's rock
rhythm guitar and striking vocals, Gail Tyler's clear voice and
vintage ukulele and Eugenia Elliott's rich resonance and delicious
honky tonk yodel. And now with the newly added powerhouse fiddle,
guitar and mandolin of well-traveled Rick Veras (who has played with
the likes of Patsy Montana and Rocky Stone), they create a musical
gumbo that's smooth and spicey, zingy and infectious.
Mixing in some piano, a thumping bass and
a washboard solo, the Teflons deliver a unique blend of old and new
selections that make them one of the most sought after good-time
bands in the
Midwest.
Rick Veras plays
Bluegrass, Swing and other American fiddle styles and performs
Western Swing with The Urban Hog Wranglers. He played fiddle for
Apple Tree Theatre's productions of Big River and Spitfire Grill,
and Touchstone Theatre's production of Foxfire. Rick has performed
on guitar with the late Patsy Montana, the first woman with a
million seller in country music, and Rocky Stone, who was Gene
Autry's fiddler. Rick also plays mandolin.
Eugenia Elliott
has been singing jazz here in Chicago for the past 10 years,
and with Southport Records recorded "Where or When," a CD of big
band standards. For four years, Eugenia sang the pure and vibrant
bluegrass harmonies of the band Charming Axe. She also sings and
plays guitar and flute with the Linda M. Smith Trio.
Described as a "stunning vocalist" by the Old Time Herald,
Barbara Silverman is reknowned for her bluesy vocals, swing guitar,
piano back-up and washboard percussion. She has appeared solo and in
bands for over two decades at festivals and clubs throughout the
Midwest, including multiple appearances on A Prairie Home Companion
with the reputable Laketown
Buskers
and a featured appearance on the Studs Terkel Show. She has six
recordings on Vetco Records, Marimac Recordings and independent
releases. For additional information on Barbara, go to: http://www.silverbeammusic.com/Barbara01.html
If you are
interested in engaging the Teflons for one of your functions, please

A Brief History of
Audiovisual

The Schaumburg Township District Library is comprised
of three libraries - the Central, Hanover Park and Hoffman Estates
Branch Libraries. In 1972, the Central Library created an
Audiovisual Department which was housed in a very small area near
the Reference Department in our former building on Library Lane. The
department owned a small collection of records, cassettes and sheet
music. By the early 1980's, the Audiovisual Department moved to the
lower level in an area that was once used by the Technical Services
Department. Then in 1987, an addition to the Central Library
was completed and a new department was created for audiovisual
items. AV experienced quite a growth spurt and in the 11-year period
added eight new formats. They included videos, music CD's, laser
discs, software and CD-ROM products, audiobooks on cassette and
compact discs. When we opened the doors of the Central Library
September, 1998, we introduced 100 titles of one of our newest
formats, the DVD. Since then, we have abandoned several formats such
as the laser disc, software, records and Beta videos.
In 1995, a referendum was approved for the
construction of the new central library. Groundbreaking took place
in April 1997 and 17 months later the new STDL was opened.
Audiovisual moved into an 11,000 square foot area. For a public
library, the STDL Audiovisual Department ranks second in size in the
State of Illinois with AV holdings amounting to 100,000 items
available in 15 different formats.

The Audiovisual Department has a lot to
offer both for leisure and education. We like to capitalize on our
collections by highlighting our display areas. This practice
contributes and accounts for about 45% of the total library
circulation.

Movie Licensing USA

 Patrons

The Library has acquired
a Movie Copyright Compliance Site License from Movie Licensing
USA.
Movie Licensing USA, Licensing
Agent for Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, Hollywood
Pictures, Warner Bros., Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures,
Paramount Pictures, Miramax Films, DreamWorks Pictures,
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Universal Pictures, Sony Pictures and United
Artists and a number of their subsidiaries, provides Movie
Public Performance Copyright Compliance Site Licensing to the
Schaumburg Township District Library for the showing of
entertainment videos.
A Movie Public
Performance Site License from Movie Licensing USA permits a public
library to be compliant with U.S. Copyright Law whenever the library
staff shows copyrighted videocassettes or DVD movies from the
authorized studio list.
The Audiovisual Department has taken advantage of
public performance licensing to enhance and develop its library
programming and to increase patron participation for the past
three years, using major entertainment movies without copyright
infringement.
Patrons often ask the library to
publicize movie titles electronically; however, the Movie
Public Performance Site License does not permit advertisement of the
titles to the general public. In addition, the movies may not
be altered, duplicated or transmitted electronically in any form
without specific permission from the copyright owner. The
library can list them as “history movie”, “scary movie”, etc.,
but may not advertise the title. Publicity of titles to the
general public would infringe on the copyright.
Every
Wednesday at 7 p.m and every Thursday at 2 p.m. the Audiovisual
Department will exhibit a feature film. For additional information
about a specific movie presentation, please contact the Audiovisual
Department by calling (847) 923-3182. Additional assitance is
available at the Audiovisual Information desk.
