National Library Week
Ed Coward
Trio Sunday, April
2
1 p.m. Library
Lobby
 Ed Coward
The kick-off celebration for National
Library Week is scheduled for Sunday, April 2 from noon until 3 p.m.
The library's lobby will be transformed into a circus "big top" with
carnival games, prizes and music, as well as a magician and
stilt-walker. Parents are welcome to bring a camera for photos of
children posing in life-size clown cut-outs or standing with Reggie
the Reading Raccoon. Library staff will be on hand to greet people,
run the games and provide information. In a lobby full of festive,
circus style decorations, patrons can enter contests and drawings as
well as hear live music from 1 - 3 p.m. performed by the Ed Coward
Trio. The trio will perform familiar Jazz and Pop songs. As a band
leader in Los Angeles, Mr. Coward has led trio, combos and big bands
and has performed in all types of venues. As a freelance musician,
Mr. Coward has worked with Nellie Lutcher, Bill Hadnott, Joe
Darensberg, Quincy Jones and many others.
Kids will have fun with a variety of
carnival games in the lobby, including a bean bag toss, ring toss,
Bozo buckets and miniature golf, along with a rubber duck pond.
And...unlike carnivals, all the games are free. Also included in the
festivities will be a small book sale and audiovisual sale which
will benefit libraries destroyed in Hurrican Katrina. We hope you'll
find some good used books and videos to support this cause.

A Brief History
of the Audiovisual Department
|
In 1972, the Central
Library created an Audiovisual Department which was housed in a
very small area near the Reference Department in our former building
at 32 West Library Lane. The AV department owned a small
collection of records, cassettes and sheet music. By 1987, an
addition to the Central Library was completed and a new department
was created for AV items. AV experienced quite a growth spurt and in
that 15 year period added eight new formats. They included
videos, music CD's, laser discs, software and CD-Rom products. When
the present building was built and opened to the public in
September, 1998, we introduced 100 titles of our newest format, the
DVD. Just this month, we have introduced two new formats, the
MP3Book by PlayAway and the MP3CD. The AV Department now
houses more than 100,000 items in its collection.
The
Library has significantly
invested in the decor of the AV department. The walls are decorated
with large murals by Skyline Design of Chicago, Illinois which
depict five classic movies. Twenty-four pictures of recording
stars grace the walls made available by Allen Vuchetich of Chicago,
Illinois. Some of these images like the Streisand, Hitchcock and
Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra just stand on their own as stunning
images of an era long gone. Completing the decor are ten
instruments supplied by Karnes Music of Elk Grove Village, Illinois
and fourteen smaller instruments donated by a former STDL staff
member.
The Library's
Audiovisual Department has a lot to offer both for leisure and
education. We like to capitalize on our collection by highlighting
our display areas. This practice contributes and accounts for
48% of the total library circulation.
Audiovisual - Its Commitment to
Excellence
The Audiovisal staff
continues to inventory its collection on an ongoing basis. We try
very hard to keep the collection up-to-date. Our patrons have
enjoyed our weeding efforts as expressed daily. The method of
marketing and highlighting our collection in our display areas
continues to be very active. The AV Department is an enjoyable area
and our patrons have been blessed with one of the most extensive AV
collections in library history. The Library's AV Department will
continue to successfully offer both leisure and educational
materials for many years to
come. | |
