The Swing Kings Orchestra, under the
direction of Randy King, is a 16-piece big band playing favorites
from the '30s and '40s. His brother Dave also plays in the band,
which was established in 1992. They contend that they play for the
same reasons: the thrill of playing live, experiencing the chemistry
between fellow musicians and a certain joy that comes from making
people feel young and happy.
The brothers own a music store in
Bradley, IL called KINGMUSIC, which was established in 1984.
KINGMUSIC succeeded because it fulfilled a need in the area for a
business that was involved in the community and put music education
first.
The brothers may own their music store
in Bradley but they also keep their hands full with a variety of
bands. The audience may remember their
performance last year when their Kings of Dixieland performed in
Town Square.
The brothers, by themselves or
together, play in everything from big bands to the Theatiki historic
fife and drum corps. Randy and Dave have customized groups to meet
the requirements for a certain gig. Over the years separate groups
have evolved such as the Dave King Quintet...or is it the
quartet...or trio? In addition to those mentioned in this article,
the following groups have evolved such as: Kankakee River Valley
Wind Ensemble; Everyday People; and the Three J's.

With the retirement of Freddy Mills in
October 1997, loyal followers are pleased that the music continues
under the direction of the Weiss brothers, Rich and Ray. They are
both long-time members of the Freddy Mills Orchestra. The 10-piece
Weiss Brothers Orchestra has performed throughout the Chicagoland
area for over 40 years.
When Freddy Mills retired, he let Rich
and Ray use his music library. Mills arranged about 90 percent of
the music they perform. The quality of his arrangements is what
makes their sound so pleasing and so unique.
Rich Weiss plays the saxophone and Ray
plays the trombone. Another brother, Tom, is a member of the Teddy
Lee Orchestra which will be featured Monday, June 19.
Joanne Weiss is the featured vocalist.
At one time, Joanne was the vocalist for the Norm Ladd Orchestra.
She has performed with the Weiss Brothers for the past three
years.
The Weiss Brothers Orchestra is noted
for its full sound and danceable music. It has played at many area
ballrooms, including Melody Mill, Chevy Chase and the Willowbrook
Ballroom (formerly known as O'Henry Ballroom) in Willow Springs. The
orchestra has also played at outdoor concerts at Navy Pier,
Chicago's Grant Park, Westchester Fun Fest and many other places too
numerous to mention.

PLANS 50TH
ANNIVERSARY |
|
Happy 50th Birthday to the Village of Schaumburg!
The
Schaumburg Township District Library, in cooperation with the
Schaumburg Park District and the Village of Schaumburg, is
presenting free entertainment this summer. The events are held
across the street from the library in Schaumburg's Town
Square.
Vito Buffalo Orchestra
Vito Buffalo and his 18-piece orchestra will
kick-off the summer concert series with vocalists Lee Stevens and
Bob Shipner on THursday, June 1. The concerts continue through
Monday, Aug. 14. All ages are welcome to come and hear some of
Chicagoland's best suburban bands and singers. In case of bad weather, the orchestral concerts will
be rescheduled. Please notice some changes in dates. Not all
concerts take place on Monday evenings. Each event starts at 7
p.m.
The creation of
these big band concerts started approximately three years ago.
Because of patron suggestions and love for this style of music, the
bands were called, interviews with bandleaders were conducted,
contracts were drawn up and advertising was prepared. With the
cooperation of the Village of Schaumburg and the Schaumburg Park
District, the library was able to schedule a summer filled with
quality big band music. We are honored and excited to present the
following roster of events all mentioned in this June issue of
Musically Yours.

The Teddy Lee
Orchestra, under the direction of Teddy Lee Jr., has roots in the
dance band heritage reaching back to the 1930's. In 1990, Teddy Lee
Jr. accepted the baton from his father, Teddy Lee Sr., insuring the
continuation of the orchestra's great tradition.
The band provides a
variety of listening and dancing enjoyment through its inimitable
style and vast custom arrangements of classic tunes, waltzes, Latin,
society, jazz and Dixieland. Hit tunes of the big band era, show
tunes and popular songs of the great American song writers are all a
part of the Teddy Lee tradition.

Vocalist, Peter
Oprisko, known as "Chicago's singing sensation," is pictured with
Teddy Lee Jr. He will round out the variety of the orchestra to make
it a total big band experience. Often described as the next Frank
Sinatra, vocalist extraordinaire Peter Oprisko is America's best
crooner of pre-1975 adult popular standards that spans an amazing
2000-song repertoire ranging from swing, jazz and Latin gems to
ballads, Broadway classics and even country. His song stylings have
attracted many fans of all ages who enjoy great, timeless, quality
entertainment. If you are interested in engaging Peter
Oprisko for one of your functions, please contact Peter at (877) 474-6287. You can visit Peter at his website: http://www.peteroprisko.com. or e-mail him at: POPRISKO@AOL.COM
Over the years the
orchestra has played for tens of thousands and performed over 5000
engagements. Each year ends with Chicagoland's best interactive New
Years' Eve party which is held at the famous Willowbrook Ballroom.
The 13-piece orchestra looks forward to entering its 47th year of
providing the best big band entertainment and dance music available
anywhere. The orchestra plays Chicago ballrooms, weddings, national
big band weekends and major charity/corporate events. They also
appear frequently at Navy Pier, Grant Park and Taste of Chicago.
Fads, trends and entire
pop culture movements have come and gone since the inception of the
Teddy Lee Orchestra, but the band continues onward without
compromise. Their integrity, as much as their style, has helped them
build a loyal audience. It won't be long before the rest of the
world finds out what fans closer to Chicago already know. If you are
interested in engaging Teddy Lee for one of your functions, please
contact Teddy Lee at: (815) 744-1619 or e-mail him at: ted_lega@hotmail.com.
