Edition Big Band
The Limited Edition Big
Band, Inc. has been
delighting audiences in the Chicago area for more than 20
years. With a stunning library of over 1100 songs, these
musicians cover the full spectrum of big band swing, jazz and
dance music. The band was formed in March, 1988 by Dick Gulbrandsen
who plays trombone with the group. Dick has had a long standing love
affair with big band music, having started his first band in 1950.
He has been playing with local area bands ever since.
Although he has played shows, orchestra pits, symphonic concert
bands and even a drum and bugle corps, big band music is what he
enjoys playing the most.
These 17 musicians, many of whom are
session players or members of other jazz, big band or pop bands in
the Chicago Metropolitan area, are a "cream of the crop" ensemble.
The Limited Edition Big Band, Inc. has
performed at most venues in the Chicago area and just finished
its 5th appearance on the main stage of the Naperville Rib Fest
on July 4 following Loretta Lynn's act. The band has been invited
back for July 4, 2007
Playing a variety of
locations, including private parties, formal dinner dances, clubs,
festivals and parades, the band has built up quite a following.
It has performed at the openings of several area night clubs,
including the Living Room in Schaumburg. In the spirit of the old
time big bands, the band rented a bus and traveled to southern
Illinois to perform at the Peoria Riverfront Jazz Festival. In
January of 2006, the band played for dancing and also a jazz concert
aboard the Mediteranea, a Costa Cruise Line cruise ship.
The ages of the
musicians range from 25 to 85, thereby mixing experience with
youthful exuberance. Several of the players have toured
internationally with big stars. Dick Daugherty, who plays lead alto
sax, at one time toured with Henry Mancini. Scott Fisher,
trombonist, toured with the Ray Charles ensemble in Italy. There are
many fine soloists with the band in all sections and they are
frequently showcased. Limited Edition also lays claim to a
featured trumpet play, Cary Davids, who moonlights as a nuclear
physicist.
While the music of
greats like Count Basie are popular with the band, classics by Glenn
Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman also are well represented. Many
tunes from the "good old days" have been brought into the
present with new, modern arrangements.
 Julie Creighton
Julie Creighton has been the vocalist with
the Limited Edition Big Band for the last
seven years. She started as a drummer and percussionist in 6th grade
- skills she learned from her late brother,
drummer/bandleader, Tony Caselli. Julie played all
through high school in the jazz band led by Paul Tolosko. She gave
up the drums to focus on singing at 19 and has been a vocalist ever
since, except for taking a hiatus to concentrate on motherhood. When
Gloria Estefan was on Oprah promoting her tune "Reach" for the 1996
Summer Olympic Games, Julie had the pleasure of being one of her
backup singers for the show. Julie is married to
bandleader/musician, Dave Creighton and has enjoyed returning to her
big band roots. She enjoys singing a variety of vocal
arrangements by revisiting some of the beautiful timeless standards
as well as more contemporary material.

Town Square Concerts |
|
August culminates the Schaumburg
Township District Library's summer concert series. The concerts
continue through Monday, Aug. 14. The events are held across the
street from the library in Schaumburg's Town Square. All
ages are welcome to come and hear some of Chicagoland's best
suburban bands and singers. In case of bad
weather, the orchestral concerts will be rescheduled. Please
notice some changes in dates. Not all concerts take place on
Monday evenings. Each event starts at 7 p.m.
The creation of these big band concerts
started approximately three years ago. Because of patron
suggestions and love for this style of music, the bands were called,
interviews with bandleaders were conducted, contracts were drawn up
and advertising was prepared. With the cooperation of the
Village of Schaumburg and the Schaumburg Park District, the library
was able to schedule a summer filled with quality big band music.
Program brochures feature all the
events by performance date and includes businesses in Schaumburg
Township who have agreed to co-sponsor our events. We are
grateful to these businesses and encourage all of you to patronize
them. We could have never accomplished this promotion without
them. The program brochures will list the following

Spring Valley Concert Band
Directed by John M. Snow
Wednesday, Aug. 9
Schaumburg's very own community band will appear for
the eighth consecutive year. Founded in 1994 by area
musicians for musicians, the Spring Valley Concert Band
encourages lifetime participation in and appreciation of the
arts. The band provides an invaluable service to anyone who plays or
has played a band instrument, giving them a venue to continue their
musical experience beyond the high school or college band level,
regardless of their career choices.
The members of the Spring Valley Concert
Band volunteer a combined total of over 5,000 hours a year
preparing for performances. They were recently recognized as the
2004 "Volunteer-of-the-Year" organization by the Village of Schaumburg for
their efforts to share their music with the "forgotten" residents of
Veterans hospitals and senior nursing/rehab centers.

John N. Snow has served as music director and
conductor of the Spring Valley Concert Band
since August 1999, following his outstanding contributions as a musician
and associate conductor. Some audience members may remember him from
his student teaching days at Schaumburg High School. He graduated
from the University of Illinois (Champaign) with a bachelor's degree in
Music Education. He has been a band director of middle and high
schools for the past ten years.
The band's roster of more than
40 musicians represents diverse occupations and ages include
students to seniors, and playing levels from talented amateurs to
professional status, each one reflecting a commendable spirit of
volunteerism. The repertoire is not limited to style. Concerts
may include swing, show tunes, patriotic tributes, contemporary jazz and
classical overtures, along with legendary marches including "The Stars and
Stripes Forever" - a signature closer. They try to choose selections that
will appeal to our diverse audience, and they often feature guest
artists.
If you are interested in engaging in the
Spring Valley Concert Band for one of your
functions, please contact the bands voice mail system at 847-289-4227 or

Jay Mau Orchestra
Thursday, August 3
Vocalists: Luci D'Mari and Del
Bergeson
Time: 7
p.m.
The Jay Mau Orchestra
The Jay Mau Orchestra
performance has been rescheduled for August 3 due to the extreme

The Jay Mau
Orchestra, formed in 1932, was originally called the
Roy Gordon Orchestra. When leader Roy Carlos passed away several
years ago, Jay Mau took over the band and renamed it the Jay Mau
Orchestra. Jay has been an active musician in the Joliet area for 35
years. You may remember the group called the Three Jay's, which he
formed in the 1960's. Jay's Uncle Robert had a big band in the
1930's called Bob Mau and the Orioles. The Jay Mau Orchestra is
composed of local musicians who love to entertain. They will be
returning to the library for the third consecutive year.
The Jay Mau Orchestra
has performed throughout the greater Chicago area providing big band
sounds of some of the great orchestras such as Tommy Dorsey, Glenn
Miller, Woody Herman, Dick Jurgens, Guy Lombardo, Eddy Howard
and many more. Some of the locations the orchestra has performed are
the Empress, Rialto, Oak Brook Hyatt and the Lincolnshire
Country Club.
Vocalists for
the evening include Luci D'Mari and Del
Bergeson.
