featuringPetra van Nuis-vocalistAndy Brown-guitarStewart Miller-bass
Petra van Nuis is a fresh voice on the Chicago jazz scene. Inspired by such greats as Peggy Lee, Chris Connor, Chet Baker, Shirley Horn, Billie Holiday, and Julie London (just to name a few!), she opts for a straightforward swinging delivery with an emphasis on feeling. Her warm intimate sound has just a hint of breathiness. Her approach is simple and without affectation. The timeless music of the Great American Songbook inspires her creatively, while she enjoys unearthing obscure songs as well. Bringing her extensive and unique repertoire to the music scene, Petra expresses her originality with a sincerity felt by audiences and fellow musicians alike. Petra is a musicians’ singer who would rather focus on the music than on the spotlight. Wherever she sings, Petra connects with people.Having relocated to Chicago in late 2003 with her husband, guitarist Andy Brown, Petra has performed at such prominent venues as the Chicago Cultural Center, the Green Mill, Pops for Champagne, the Pump Room, Andy’s Jazz Club, La Piazza Sotto Jazz Club, the Signature Lounge at the Hancock Tower, the Drake Hotel, Katerina’s, Pete Miller’s Steakhouse, and Philander’s with such well-known Chicago musicians as Brad Williams, Russ Phillips, Dennis Luxion, Kelly Sill, Jim Cox, Judy Roberts, Stu Miller, Art Davis, Dennis Carroll, George Fludas, Tom Hope, and Rob Amster. Petra has also sung at the Tribute to Bix Fest and the Richmond Jazz Festival.
A Cincinnati native, Petra’s first exposure to music came from her father, a fine classical pianist. Her professional debut came at age 11 with the Cincinnati Opera Company. By age 12, she was on the road in her first national tour. For middle and high school, Petra attended the Cincinnati School for the Creative and Performing Arts and continued her education during the summers at New York City Ballet’s School of American Ballet and at the San Francisco Ballet School. She then went on to receive her BFA in Musical Theatre at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Upon graduation, Petra spent a couple of years performing around the country in regional theater and on national tours. Some highlights from that time include a national tour of “A Chorus Line” and dancing in the Radio City Rockettes’ Christmas Spectacular. Having had these experiences, Petra left the theatre world to focus on her true love of jazz sin ging. She was soon singing at such Cincinnati venues as the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Cincinnatian Hotel, the Celestial Incline Lounge, and the Promontory Jazz Club with such world-class musicians as Kenny Poole, John von Ohlen, and Steve Schmidt. She then moved to New York City where she performed at such venues as the Flute Lounge, Swing 46, Terra Blues, and Kavehaz with such renowned musicians as Murray Wall, Joe Cohn, and Paul Meyers.

Grasslands Acoustic
Jazz QuartettefeaturingMichael O'Connell-guitarMike Church-guitarRocco Phipps-bassRick Veras-fiddleWhen he was a student at Syracuse, Mike O'Connell, the front man for the Grasslands Acoustic Jazz Quartette, was knighted by John Lennon. It wasn't a broadsword that Lennon used, but an umbrella at a water-themed art exhibit. The two exchanged words about making the umbrella a part of the show, and
O'Connell still has it somewhere. Perhaps that knighting bestowed a sprinkling of Lennon's quick-witted ability to poke fun at pretension, while delivering excellent musicianship, upon O'Connell, who can deliver blisteringly paced finger-picking on a curious array of instruments while making it seem effortless. This quartette thrives on musical freedom and energetic virtuoso. To book the band, go to their website at: www.grasslandsmusic.com.E-mail Mike O'Connell at:or at (630)443-2676.
Mark Colby/Frank Caruso Trio7 p.m.Monday, Nov. 6Audiovisual DepartmentfeaturingMark Colby - tenor saxFrank Caruso - pianoCurt Bley - bassMark comes from a musical background as his father was a professional musician who played with the Benny Goodman Orchestra during the 40's. At the age of 8, Mark was given a clarinet and lessons with a wonderful teacher who emphasized the importance of proper technique and reading. At age 11, Mark took the next step in his evolution --saxophone -- and thus began his life-long love affair. Immersed in the sounds of the big bands enjoyed by his father, intrigued by the more modern sounds of bebop, cool and hard-bop records his sister played around the house, his dedication to pursuing a life in music was cemented. In the 60's Mark began playing professionally at the age of 14.While living in the Miami Beach area, he had the opportunity to play shows and popular acts, including Tony Bennett, Sonny and Cher, Bill Cosby, Ann Margret and Sammy Davis Jr., with seasoned musicians. While attending the University of Miami, Mark enrolled in Jerry Coker's Jazz Studies program. He studied under Jerry and pianist Vince Maggio. While in college, he worked with the legendary baritone sax player Gerry Mulligan. He then went on to record with the likes of Dr. John, Wilson Pickett, Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones and the Bee Gees. After graduating with a Master's Degree in Jazz Studies, he received a call from Maynard Ferguson inviting him to join his band in New York. After three albums and three years of touring as featured soloist and musical director with Maynard, Bob James beckoned. Mark's tours with Maynard and Bob found him playing jazz festivals and concert halls around the world. In 1980, Mark moved to Chicago. Jobs were plentiful. In 1983, he was approached by DePaul University to assume a teaching position as jazz saxophone instructor. Twenty-one years later, he's still there and in '98 joined the faculty at Elmhurst College. In the ensuing years, he has played and toured with such varied luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Jaco Pastorius, Mose Allison, Joe Williams and Charlie Haden. If you are interested in engaging Mark for one of your events, call him at:630.585.0230 or
