When he was a student
at Syracuse, Mike O'Connell, the front man for the Grasslands
Acoustic Jazz Quartette, was knighted by John Lennon. It wasn't a
broadsword that Lennon used, but an umbrella at a water-themed art
exhibit. The two exchanged words about making the umbrella a
part of the show, and O'Connell still has it somewhere. Perhaps that
knighting bestowed a sprinkling of Lennon's quick-witted ability to
poke fun at pretension, while delivering excellent musicianship,
upon O'Connell, who can deliver blisteringly paced
finger-picking on a curious array of instruments while making it
seem effortless.
This quartette thrives
on musical freedom and energetic virtuoso.

Quartet

Arriving here from
Angouleme, France, sister city of Hoffman Estates, this barber shop
quartet will perform in English and French. Tenor Bruno Buijtenhuijs
will play clarinet, flute, guitar and banjo. The group's lyric
singer Marie-Cecile Heraud, who has performed in many
operas, will accompany Jazz singers Isabelle Drault and Bertrand
Antigny. The latter is skilled at imitatating many instruments
with his voice.
The quartet is managed
by Marie-Helene Favereau and will sing barber shop songs in English, many of
them humorous, all using barbershop harmony. They also sing 3
or 4 songs in French to remain exotic.
The quartet began eight
years ago when four friends who are singers discovered the
barbershop style of singing which is relatively unknown in France.
They decided to sing it for their own pleasure. They are
now professional and play throughuot France, including at
festivals and in theaters. The highlight of their career
has been the opportunity to sing in an American barbershop
quartet competition. They will compete in Elkhorn, Wisconsin on
Oct. 21.
Hoffman Estates,
Illinois and Angouleme, France have been sister cities for 10
years. The Hoffman Estates Sister Cities Commission is
comprised of 15 members, chaired by Lillian Mosier
and co-chaired by Janice Cook. The commission members
responsible for the barbershop quartet visit are Marcia Frank,
Jean-Marc Bartsch, Cindy Ruszay, Ken Campbell, Dennis Nadon, Kathy
Cochrane-Eckhart and Lillian
Mosier. |

Mark
Colby/Frank Caruso Trio

Mark comes from a
musical background as his father was a professional musician who
played with the Benny Goodman Orchestra during the 40's. At the age
of 8, Mark was given a clarinet and lessons with a wonderful
teacher who emphasized the importance of proper technique and
reading. At age 11, Mark took the next step in his evolution
--saxophone -- and thus began his life-long love affair.
Immersed in the sounds of the big bands enjoyed by his father,
intrigued by the more modern sounds of bebop, cool and hard-bop
records his sister played around the house, his dedication to
pursuing a life in music was cemented. In the 60's Mark began
playing professionally at the age of 14.
While living in the
Miami Beach area, he had the opportunity to play shows and popular
acts, including Tony Bennett, Sonny and Cher, Bill Cosby, Ann
Margret and Sammy Davis Jr., with seasoned musicians. While
attending the University of Miami, Mark enrolled in Jerry Coker's
Jazz Studies program. He studied under Jerry and pianist Vince
Maggio. While in college, he worked with the legendary baritone sax
player Gerry Mulligan. He then went on to record with the likes of
Dr. John, Wilson Pickett, Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones and the
Bee Gees. After graduating with a Master's Degree in Jazz
Studies, he received a call from Maynard Ferguson inviting him to
join his band in New York. After three albums and three years
of touring as featured soloist and musical director with Maynard,
Bob James beckoned. Mark's tours with Maynard and Bob found him
playing jazz festivals and concert halls around the world.
In 1980, Mark moved to
Chicago. Jobs were plentiful. In 1983, he was approached by DePaul
University to assume a teaching position as jazz saxophone
instructor. Twenty-one years later, he's still there and in '98
joined the faculty at Elmhurst College. In the ensuing years, he has
played and toured with such varied luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Jaco
Pastorius, Mose Allison, Joe Williams and Charlie
Haden.
