Mark Colby/Frank Caruso Trio
Mark Colby - tenor sax
Frank Caruso - piano
           Curt Bley - bass

Mark comes from a musical background as his father was a professional musician who played with the Benny Goodman Orchestra during the 40's. At the age of 8, Mark was given a clarinet and lessons with a wonderful teacher  who emphasized the importance of proper technique and reading. At age 11, Mark took the next step in his evolution --saxophone -- and thus began his life-long love affair. Immersed in the sounds of the big bands enjoyed by his father, intrigued by the more modern sounds of bebop, cool and hard-bop records his sister played around the house, his dedication to pursuing a life in music was cemented. In the 60's Mark began playing professionally at the age of 14.

While living in the Miami Beach area, he had the opportunity to play shows and popular acts, including Tony Bennett, Sonny and Cher, Bill Cosby, Ann Margret and Sammy Davis Jr., with seasoned musicians. While attending the University of Miami, Mark enrolled in Jerry Coker's Jazz Studies program. He studied under Jerry and pianist Vince Maggio. While in college, he worked with the legendary baritone sax player Gerry Mulligan. He then went on to record with the likes of Dr. John, Wilson Pickett, Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones and the Bee Gees.  After graduating with a Master's Degree in Jazz Studies, he received a call from Maynard Ferguson inviting him to join his band in New York.  After three albums and three years of touring as featured soloist and musical director with Maynard, Bob James beckoned. Mark's tours with Maynard and Bob found him playing jazz festivals and concert halls around the world.

In 1980, Mark moved to Chicago. Jobs were plentiful. In 1983, he was approached by DePaul University to assume a teaching position as jazz saxophone instructor. Twenty-one years later, he's still there and in '98 joined the faculty at Elmhurst College. In the ensuing years, he has played and toured with such varied luminaries as Frank Sinatra, Jaco Pastorius, Mose Allison, Joe Williams and Charlie Haden.

Random Ringers

For the past 15 years, the Random Ringers have  performed handbell music for the benefit of hundreds of people in the north and northwest suburbs. They ring a variety of pieces, i.e; secular, popular and relgious, on 4 ½ octaves of Schulmerich handbells and 3 octaves of Malmark choir chimes.

Random Ringers is not affiliated with any religious environment, but each individual member rings in her/his own church. Experience varies, but some have been ringing for as long as 25 years. Members hail from the Northwest suburbs and practice in Palatine each Monday night. They take pride in bringing a quality performance to each venue at which they appear. This holiday season is no exception as the 11 ringers perform old favorites as well as new pieces sure to please audiences of all ages.

Most places in which they perform are repeat engagements from previous years. They include: DesPlaines Public Library, Luther Village in Arlington Heights, the Schaumburg Township District Library and new to the group this year - the Park Ridge Public Library. Previously they have played at many enior residential facilities in the area and always participate in the Northern Illinois Spring Rings.

This is the second year for Beth McFarland, the director. She has been involved with handbells for 20 years and is currently the director of Joy Bells and a member of the Heritage Bells of UMC of Libertyville. Beth works full time and teaches piano in addition to directing the Random Ringers.
