Slay a Book

2005 Teen Summer Reading Event

May 16 - August 30

 

Slay a Book this summer and join in some spine-tingling events for teens.  Designed by the Teen Advisory Board, programs will include Terror Tuesdays with scary movies, a Scary Scavenger Hunt and much more!  Teens going into grades 7-12 can participate in the reading program by picking up a SCARE (BINGO-type) card from the Reader Services Desk at the central library or at the Hoffman Estates or Hanover Park branch libraries.  Filling out review slips for books read will also enter teens into weekly prize drawings beginning in June. Finish the activities and/or books in a row of five squares to complete your SCARE card and pick up a prize between July 11-August 31.  Prizes will include Schaumburg Flyers game vouchers and more. Ticket vouchers will be for the following Schaumburg Flyers game dates: July 21, July 25 or August 3. Game vouchers will be given for completing a row of BINGO while supplies last, but everyone who finishes the program will receive a prize! 

 

 

Teen Invasion 2005

June 13 - August 13

 

This award winning program for teens returns this summer to Schaumburg Township. Many more activities have been added to the program. Teens in grades 7-12 can earn tickets this summer by going to museums or theaters, reading, taking a class, registering bicycles with the police department, volunteering and more. Each activity earns teens tickets for drawings. Tickets can be turned in to the Reader Services Desk at the central library or the Hoffman Estates or Hanover Park branch libraries. Other participating agencies may collect tickets as well.  Drawings will be held July 1, July 15, July 29, August 12.  Prizes will include $50 and $25 gift certificates to area stores, free passes for local games, movie tickets and more!

 

Sisterhood of the

Traveling Pants Event

Tuesday, June 14  /  2-4 p.m.

Youth Services Craft Room

 

Did you read the wonderful Sisterhood books by Ann Brashares?  Come experience the fun of sisterhood with this event.  Teens in grades 7-12 will make jean purses, friendship bracelets and more.  Local artist Carol Thomas will demonstrate making a memorable journal and/or

stationary art.  Register by calling Teen Coordinator Amy Alessio at (847) 923-3191 or emailing aalessio@stdl.org.All participants must bring in an old pair of jeans to cut up for making the purse!

 

 

Teen Invasion

Kickoff Barbecue

Friday, June 17  / Noon-3 p.m.

Maple Park, next to the Schaumburg Township Building at One Illinois Blvd., Hoffman Estates

 

Hosted by Schaumburg Township Spectrum Youth and Family Services, this teen event will celebrate the beginning of summer and Teen Invasion.  Teens from all over the township are invited to enjoy food, volleyball, Frisbee and softball.  Attending the Barbecue counts as a ticket for the Teen Invasion program, too!  

 

 

 

 

 

Teen Art Club

Tuesdays, June 28 & July 26

Do you like to create art?  Do you like to make crafts or paint?  Then come join the Teen Art Club.  Each month will feature a different theme or idea.  Snacks and inspiration will be available.  Students in grades 6-9 are welcome to participate.  To register, call (847) 923-3191

Terror Tuesdays

Every Tuesday in July  /  1-4 p.m.

Teen Center and Audiovisual Dept.

 

Teens in grades 7-12 may drop by the Teen Center from 1-3 to enjoy board games, snacks, contests and prizes before heading over to the Audiovisual Department to view some horror movies. 

 

 

 

 

 

Power Poetry

Mondays, July 11, 18, 25  /  7-8:30 p.m.

Teen Center

 

Poetry is an art form.  Teens in grades 7-12 can explore different forms of poetry during this three week workshop.  Local author Catherine Stier will work with teens to share and craft their own expressions.  Register by calling Teen Coordinator Amy Alessio at (847) 923-3191 or emailing aalessio@stdl.org.

 

 

Annual Road Rally

Wednesday, July 13  /  7-8:30 p.m.

Summer Board Meeting

The TAB plans and participates in programs throughout the Township all year.  At the summer meeting we will be tasting favorite ethnic dishes from the area and voting on favorites. Teen Writing Club

Do you like to write stories or poems?  Would you like to meet other people who like writing?  Run by local author Catherine Stier, this growing group provides a chance for teens going into grades 7-12 to share stories, poems and tips on getting published.

 

Annual Mystery

in the Library

Wednesday, July 27  /  6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Rasmussen South room

 

Do you watch cop shows or like to read mysteries?  Teens going into grades 7-12 can learn what detectives do to question witnesses and ferret out clues when a crime has been committed.  Work with a team to solve a Mystery in the Library! Pizza and dessert will be served and prizes will be awarded to the team that solves the crime!  A $5 fee is required for this event to secure your place, so register in person at the Adult Information Desk.

 

Knit Wits

Tuesday, August 2 & Thursday, August 4 

10 a.m.-Noon.  /  Teen Center

 

Learn to knit like Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock at this workshop.  Each teen in grades 7-12 will learn the basics of casting on, knitting and purling as we make squares to create a blanket for a charitable organization.  Basic supplies will be provided, but teens who know something about knitting are welcome to bring their own yarn or needles.  Teens will also receive basic hat patterns.  Register by calling Teen Coordinator Amy Alessio at (847) 923-3191 or emailing aalessio@stdl.org.

 

How to Draw Anime

and Manga Art

Teen Appreciation Week

August 8-14

 

All over Schaumburg Township, events will be held during this week to celebrate teens!  At the library, teens going into grades 7-12 may pick up a coupon to clear $10 worth of fines (not fines for damaged materials) by inquiring at the Reader Services Desk of the central library or at the branch libraries. 

 

Harry Potter Fest

Tuesday, August 9  /  Noon-4 (movie then activities)

Audiovisual department, then Youth Services

 

Finish the new book Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, then celebrate at the library!  The movie of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban will be shown in the back of the Audiovisual department from Noon-2:40 p.m., then go over to the Youth Services department to learn about secret writing, magical concoctions and hidden treasure! Snacks will be served. Young people ages 10 and up will be invited to this celebration of all things Harry Potter.  Register at the Youth Services Information Desk.
